Mountain Hike to Trolltunga

Mountain Hike to Trolltunga

Hike to Trolltunga with practical information about parking, access, and the route from Skjeggedal. A spectacular hike with views of Ringedalsvatnet and the Folgefonna glacier.

If you manage to get parking at P3 Mågelitopp, the hike becomes significantly easier. You save around 4.3 kilometres and approximately 400 metres of elevation gain each way. A shuttle bus also runs up to P3 during the season.

We started at P2 Skjeggedal, which is where most hikers arriving by car begin the hike, and followed the many hairpin bends up to Mågelitopp. From there, the route continues along a well-marked trail through high-mountain terrain. After crossing a few bridges and some easier sections, you reach the steep climb up Gryteskaret, one of the toughest parts of the hike.

Once you have completed the climb through Gryteskaret, the terrain becomes easier, although it is still undulating. Large parts of the hike are at an altitude of around 900–1,200 metres, and snow patches can still be present even during summer. Along the route, there are three emergency shelters – Floren, Endåen and Tyssehøl. These can be used if you are caught in bad weather or find yourself in an emergency situation.

As you continue, you are rewarded with impressive views of Ringedalsvatnet, and on clear days you can see the Folgefonna glacier to the west. The trail continues across the mountain plateau before Trolltunga finally comes into view, at around 1,180 metres above sea level.

The hike is not particularly technical in good conditions, but it is long and much of the route is in high-mountain terrain. You should therefore start early and allow a full day for the hike.
