Flåm & Aurland Sognefjord

About Aurlandsfjord

Aurlandsfjord is a deep branch of Sognefjord leading past Flåm and Aurlandsvangen toward the Nærøyfjord junction. Steep mountains rise directly from long stretches of shoreline, while settlements occupy river deltas and small shelves of flatter land. The fjord provides the geographical link between the Flåm Railway, the village of Aurland and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord.

Several forms of travel reveal different layers of the landscape. Ferries and sightseeing boats show farms, waterfalls and cliff profiles from water level. The road between Flåm and Aurland stays close to the shore, while Stegastein looks down from about 650 metres above it. Seasonal travel across Aurlandsfjellet adds a high-mountain perspective. Because these experiences begin in different places, the mapped fjord point should be treated as a regional reference rather than an entrance.

Visiting Aurlandsfjord

Choose between a boat journey, shoreline stop in Flåm or Aurland, or the elevated view from Stegastein. Check boat timetables, parking and road conditions for the chosen access point; the Aurlandsfjellet through-road is seasonal even though Stegastein is normally reachable year-round from Aurland.
