Bjørn West-marsjen
Every year, on the second-to-last Sunday in August, the Bjørn West-marsjen commemorates events in the Matrefjella mountains near the end of World War II.
The hike takes you past many sites connected to significant events during the war effort.
If you are hiking independently, it is a good idea to arrange return transport from Stordalen. To reach the starting point, leave the E39 just south of the Masfjord Tunnel and follow the access road for about 7 km. The start of the route is clearly marked, and the trail is easy to follow throughout.
The hike starts at Godbotsvatnet and passes Litlematrestølen. It then continues over rocky terrain and along a firm trail on the western side of Kvitevasseggjene. From there, it descends steeply to Krokvatnet and follows the southern shore through deciduous woodland. The trail then climbs to a small ridge overlooking Kringlebotn. From here, there is a steep ascent to Klavefjellet. From the highest point by Skjerjavatnet, the route crosses undulating terrain before you "plunge" down towards Stordalsvatnet.
Once you reach the finish, you can relax and round off the hike with a delicious dinner at Stordalen Fjellstove!
You can either hike the route independently or join the organised event on the second-to-last Sunday in August
