About Bøyabreen
Bøyabreen is an outlet glacier of Jostedalsbreen visible from the road near Fjærland. The glacier descends through a steep mountain hollow, and the established viewing area looks across a small lake and moraine landscape toward the ice. This makes it one of the easiest places in the region to see a glacier without a long mountain approach.
The ice front has retreated and changed shape over time, exposing fresh rock and unstable slopes. What looks like a short distance across the lake is still an active glacial environment where ice fall, rockfall and sudden meltwater changes are possible. The Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjærland provides the wider scientific context for Jostedalsbreen, climate and the way glaciers move. At the viewpoint, light and low cloud can alter how much of the upper glacier is visible.
Visiting Bøyabreen
Use the signed parking and observe Bøyabreen from the established lake-side viewing area. Do not cross barriers or try to reach the ice front; combine the stop with current information from the Norwegian Glacier Museum or Visit Sognefjord.
