About Briksdalsbreen
Briksdalsbreen is an outlet glacier of Jostedalsbreen descending into the upper part of Briksdalen near Olden. The valley approach passes waterfalls, steep rock walls and glacially polished terrain before reaching the lake and viewing area below the ice. The glacier’s position has changed substantially over time, making retreat and new vegetation visible parts of the landscape.
The established route from Briksdalsbre Fjellstove is about three kilometres each way. Visitors can walk or use seasonal Troll Cars for most of the ascent, but the final approach remains on foot. The broad valley makes the glacier easy to see without stepping onto ice, and barriers mark areas exposed to rockfall, ice fall or unstable ground. The blue colour and shape of the ice vary with light, snow cover and the season.
Visiting Briksdalsbreen
Start from Briksdalsbre Fjellstove and use the marked walking route or pre-booked seasonal Troll Car service. Keep behind barriers at the viewing area and never approach the ice front; check current trail, transport and weather information before arrival.
