About Engabreen (Svartisen)
Engabreen is a western outlet of the Svartisen ice cap descending toward Engabrevatnet and Holandsfjord in Meløy. Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier, and Engabreen was historically noted for reaching unusually close to sea level. The ice front has since retreated, leaving a changing landscape of bare rock, meltwater and glacial sediment.
The classic approach begins at Holandsvika with a seasonal boat across Holandsfjord, followed by travel toward the lake and glacier viewpoint. Braset on county road 17 offers a distant roadside view across the fjord for visitors who do not make the crossing. Although the glacier can appear close, the final terrain is dynamic: ice can calve, meltwater channels change and stones may fall from recently exposed slopes. Glacier travel requires an authorised guide and proper equipment.
Visiting Engabreen (Svartisen)
Check the seasonal boat timetable before travelling to Holandsvika and allow enough time for the return crossing. Stay on marked routes, keep well back from the ice and meltwater, and book a qualified guide for any activity on the glacier itself.
