Mountain hike to Nesheimsnipa (1,036 m) "Stairway to Heaven"

The hike to Nesheimsnipa (1,036 m) in Eksingedalen is a spectacular experience combining magnificent views with impressive trail construction.

Bergen

The hike starts in Yksendalen (475 m) and passes Yksendalsstølen (686 m) before continuing towards the summit of Nesheimsnipa.

One of the highlights along the route is the so-called "Stairway to Heaven" – a Sherpa-built stone staircase divided into three sections: at the start, midway (just after Yksendalsstølen), and near the end, where the steepest section leads up to Nesheimsnipa.

Completed in 2024, this staircase project consists of around 1,000 steps and is the result of several years of work in demanding conditions. The stones, some weighing up to one tonne, were sourced from nearby scree slopes and carefully positioned to create a safe and durable trail.

The route is well marked throughout. A large cairn stands at the summit. Return by the same route.
