Fosseråsa National Hiking Trail, Geiranger

Fosseråsa is a national hiking trail from Geiranger village to Storsæterfossen, climbing past waterfalls, woodland and historic farmland.

Geiranger

Fosseråsa is a national hiking trail rising from Geiranger village towards the waterfall Storsæterfossen, high above the fjord. Recognised in 2019 as Norway's first National Hiking Trail, it connects the waterfront with forests, old farm landscapes and the sound of cascading water.

Waterfall Walk and Norwegian Fjord Centre

The trail begins in Geiranger centre and climbs past the river and waterfalls on the Waterfall Walk, including a series of metal steps. From the Norwegian Fjord Centre, the route continues uphill towards Vesterås through woodland and sections of stone steps.

From Vesterås to Storsæterfossen

Beyond the historic farm landscape, the route follows the marked path up towards Storsæterfossen. Here it is possible to walk behind the waterfall when conditions and the access path allow. Rock and steps can become slippery, and the waterfall environment should be treated with care.

Distance and planning

Visit Stranda gives approximately 3.9 km one way, about two hours for the ascent and around 576 metres of ascent, with moderate difficulty. The return involves walking back downhill or choosing a signed alternative where suitable. Parking is available in Geiranger centre; some parking areas are chargeable. Wear sturdy footwear and check local conditions outside the main hiking season.
