About Gloppedalsura
Gloppedalsura is an enormous boulder field in Rogaland, where rockfall blocks lie on top of glacial moraine material between steep valley sides. The size of the blocks and the depth of the deposit create caves, gaps and an uneven surface that is far less stable than a normal scree slope. The road-side view reveals the scale without requiring visitors to climb among the boulders.
The site also has wartime significance. In April 1940, Norwegian forces used the terrain during fighting that delayed a German advance through the area. Memorials and interpretation connect the geology with the battle. The boulder field itself should not be treated as an adventure playground: hidden voids, loose rock and poor footing make off-route exploration hazardous, especially in snow or wet weather.
Visiting Gloppedalsura
Use the designated parking and established viewpoint or memorial area. Do not climb deep into the boulder field or enter cavities, and check road conditions before travelling through the valley in winter.
