About Grøtfjord

Grøtfjord is a small fjord and sandy beach on the outer side of Kvaløya, about 36 kilometres by road from Tromsø. The beach lies at the fjord head beneath steep mountains, with a compact settlement and working land close behind it. Its accessible Arctic-coast setting makes it popular for short outings, sunset and northern-light viewing.

The site is not a large public resort. Parking, private homes and local traffic share limited space, and strong visitor pressure has led to changing rules on camping and overnight stays. Snow, avalanche conditions on surrounding slopes and winter road weather can affect access, while the water remains very cold throughout the year. Light pollution is lower than in central Tromsø, but aurora and clear skies are never guaranteed.

Visiting Grøtfjord

Use only signed public parking and obey current camping, toilet and waste rules. Keep driveways and turning areas clear, check road and avalanche conditions in winter, and verify tide and wind before swimming or launching a small craft.
