Gulatinget in Gulen is one of Norway’s most important historic assembly sites. From around the 10th century, people from across Western Norway gathered here to make laws, settle disputes and discuss political matters. The assembly remained active for several centuries and gave rise to Gulatingslova, the oldest preserved law code in the Nordic countries.

Today, visitors can explore the Gulatinget Millennium Site at Flolid, around 4 km from Eivindvik. The open-air park combines history, art and coastal scenery, with monumental works by Norwegian sculptor Bård Breivik, including the impressive Tingveggen and Tinghella.

What to Experience

Walk through the park, explore the monuments and imagine the large gatherings that once took place here. The site is designed as both a historical memorial and a place for reflection, learning and outdoor activity.

There are also cultural walking routes in both Flolid and Eivindvik, where visitors can learn more about the original assembly sites and the history of Gulatinget. In Eivindvik, you can see the two historic stone crosses associated with the earliest period of the assembly.

The park also includes walking areas, a small bathing bay, boccia and a sand volleyball court, making it suitable for both short visits and longer stops.

Guided Tours

Gulatinget is open to the public all year round. Guided tours can be arranged for groups and provide a deeper introduction to the history of Gulatinget, Gulatingslova, the Leidang defence system and the artworks in the park.

For visitors interested in Viking history, Norwegian law and the development of representative government, Gulatinget is one of the most significant historical sites to visit on the west coast of Norway.
