About Hamningberg
Hamningberg is a former fishing settlement at the end of the road on the outer Varanger Peninsula. Unlike many communities in Finnmark, much of its older wooden building environment survived the destruction of the Second World War. The clustered houses, fish-related structures and open Barents Sea coast preserve the character of a remote nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century fishing village.
The approach is as important as the destination. The narrow seasonal road from Vardø and Vadsø passes pale, folded rock formations, exposed shoreline and an almost treeless landscape. Hamningberg has no large modern visitor complex, and many buildings remain private. Strong wind, fog and rapidly changing weather reinforce the settlement’s isolation. The road is not maintained as a normal winter route and is closed for a substantial part of the year.
Visiting Hamningberg
Travel only when the Hamningberg road is officially open, allow extra time for oncoming traffic and use public parking at the settlement. Walk respectfully among private properties and check weather and fuel before departure, as services are limited at the road end.
