Most hikers begin with a boat trip from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, before hiking back to Gjendesheim. From Memurubu, the trail climbs steadily at first before levelling out across gently rolling terrain. About halfway through the hike, you reach its most famous section: the ridge itself. Here, a steep ascent awaits, requiring both upper- and lower-body strength to reach the top. Along the way, you are rewarded with fantastic views of Gjende (984 metres above sea level) and the blue-green Bessvatnet (1,374 metres above sea level), with an impressive elevation difference of almost 400 metres between them.

After crossing Besseggen, the trail levels out before continuing across Veslefjellet (1,743 metres above sea level) and then descending towards Gjendesheim. The descent can be hard on the knees, so sturdy footwear and trekking poles are recommended for a more comfortable hike.
