Hike along Dronningstien in Hardanger
The most common route starts at Røte, crosses the mountain and descends to Lofthus. You can also hike in the opposite direction.
If you have two cars, park one in Lofthus and the other at Røte.
You can also take the scheduled bus back towards Kinsarvik. Get off at Røte, then walk up to collect your car.
A third option is to park in Lofthus and take the morning shuttle bus to the trailhead at Røte.
We started this hike at the lower car park at Røte. From here, you can either follow the road to the upper car park or take a shortcut through the forest. (See the sign at the entrance to the lower car park).
From the upper car park, follow the gravel road as it winds up the mountainside. At around 750 metres above sea level, the gravel road becomes a trail. Follow Dronningstien southwards, parallel to Sørfjorden. There are magnificent views throughout and many dramatic viewpoints. Highlights include the cairn at the summit of Duk (1,105 metres above sea level) and Nosi (905 metres above sea level). The latter is a short detour just before the descent to Lofthus. The route is well marked and the trail is good. Just before the descent at Rjukande, the trail turns sharply north-west. You then reach the Monk Steps", built by local monks in the 13th century.
The final section down to Lofthus follows a trail and then a tractor road. To save time, you can take the paths through the forest.
Hiking poles are recommended for the descent to Lofthus.
Enjoy your hike!
