Hike through Aurlandsdalen
Haven't hiked through Aurlandsdalen yet? Then it's time!
The route from Østerbø to Vassbygdi passes through a lush valley, dramatic mountain formations and historic mountain farm areas. The hike is often called "Norway's Grand Canyon" because of its impressive scenery and varied natural surroundings.
The hike starts at Østerbø Fjellstove, located approximately 820 metres above sea level. You can stay overnight and buy food here before setting off.
The trail descends through Aurlandsdalen across a varied landscape of lush meadows, steep mountainsides and wild waterfalls. Along the way, you pass historic sites such as Nesbøgalden, a narrow trail along the rock face, and Vetlahelvete, an impressive giant's kettle. The terrain alternates between easy trails, steep descents and narrow passages.
The final section towards Vassbygdi (50 metres above sea level) passes through woodland before opening up to fantastic views of the valley.
