Besshøe is a high and strenuous alternative above Gjende, with views down to the green lake, blue Bessvatnet and the Besseggen ridge. The route from Gjendesheim crosses long stretches of exposed, rocky mountain terrain and should be attempted in stable weather. The published route is 22.2 km return, with 1,320 m of ascent; allow 10 hr. It is graded very demanding and the recommended season is july–september. Paid parking is available at Gjendesheim.
