Hike to Bogafjellet (633 m) in Vaksdal

Tackle Monster Hill to Bogavatnet and enjoy panoramic views from Bogafjellet!

Bergen

You can park in a roadside parking bay along Bogaveien, near the entrance to Øvre Bogaveien. From here, follow Øvre Bogaveien uphill and continue along the flat section. After about 100 metres, a gravel/construction road branches off to the left. Follow it up a steep hill and continue through several bends.

After the bends, the road levels out and continues at a steady incline through the valley. Keep going until you reach the waterfall. Just beyond the waterfall, you will encounter an exceptionally steep hill, known locally as "Monster Hill". Continue along the construction road until you reach the dam at Bogavatnet. Benches have been provided here, making it a great place for a break.

The construction road ends at the dam. Cross the dam and follow the trail that begins just beyond it, heading northwest. The trail is easy to follow and leads towards Bogafjellet. When you reach the cabin, the trail becomes less distinct, but from here the route is marked with red-painted stakes. Follow these to the summit of Bogafjellet.

The summit itself is not particularly well marked, with only a small cairn. From here, there are excellent views of the fjord to the northwest. For the best view – “the grand view” – retrace your steps along the trail for a short distance, then turn west and round a small subsidiary summit descending towards Sørfjorden. The views here are spectacular: Sørfjorden straight ahead, Hananipa to the left, and Bruviknipa and Olsnesnipa to the right.

On your way back down towards Bogavatnet, you can take a detour to the cabin and enjoy the view from the lovely viewing bench facing the fjord.

Return by the same route. Alternatively, from the area around Bogavatnet, you can follow the trail downhill instead of taking the construction road. This trail is steep and features sturdy stone steps. It eventually rejoins the construction road further down.

Enjoy your hike!
