Hike to Flatbreen and Flatbrehytta (994 m above sea level) in Fjærland

Sognefjord

This is an exciting mountain hike. From the car park, cross the road and follow the trail signposted "Flatbrehytta". The trail soon becomes a forest road. This winding road climbs steadily before turning back into a trail. Continue uphill along the left side of the Tverrdøla river. Further up, cross the river via a bridge. Take care if the water level is high. Continue along the trail on the other side until you reach the trail junction.

The most popular "standard" trail to the glacier and cabin is on the left, but for the ultimate experience, we recommend taking the trail to the right.

Follow the trail to the right, down towards the river. Crossing the river can be difficult as there are many twigs and branches here. If the water level is high, we recommend taking the "standard" trail up to the cabin. The trail resumes a little further down on the other side of the river. Look for a red painted marker. Follow the trail up the valley on the right side of the river. The ascent is steady, with some steep sections. When you reach the saddle (around 700 m above sea level), follow the trail north. If you wish, you can take a quick detour up to Vetla Supphellenipa.

Follow the trail towards the icefall. Once you reach the top of the ridge, you will see the enormous glacier tongue stretching downwards. Follow the trail along the left side of the glacier tongue towards Flatbredalen. At the trail junction, we recommend taking the path to the right, which leads up onto the ridge in front of the glacier. Walk the entire length of the ridge, parallel to the glacier tongue. This is an incredible experience, but it can be a little daunting if you are afraid of heights. At the end of the ridge, descend to the left and follow the trail to Flatbrehytta. From here, you have a perfect view of Fjærlandsfjorden.

For the return journey, take the trail leading downhill on the right side of the cabin. This brings you back to the trail junction where you previously turned right.

Enjoy your hike!
