Hike to Hornelen, Europe's Highest Sea Cliff (860 m)
Walk to the end of the car park. Here, you will find a sign for Hornelen and a description of the hike. Continue through the forest and up the Sherpa steps. Just before the steps end, you can take the path to the left. It makes an extra loop but is much better than the route from the top of the Sherpa steps.
However, if there has been a lot of rain, it may be better to continue from where the Sherpa steps end, as this avoids crossing a river. Either way, both routes join the same path farther up the hillside.
Follow the marked path through the forest. It is steep, so the vegetation soon thins out. At around 300 metres above sea level, the views across the fjord improve. Follow the ridge up to 550 metres above sea level. The path now turns south and enters another steep section. At the top, it levels out and begins to descend. The landscape now changes to rocky mountain terrain. Cross between the two small lakes and follow the marked path southeast. After another steep scrambling section, you enter a long valley. From here, simply follow the open plateau landscape into the valley. The path is marked with red T-shaped cairns and has been prepared for hikers.
Follow the marked path to the left of Uraheia, where it descends steeply into the final valley. It is very rocky here, so watch your footing. At the bottom of the valley, you join the path from Berleneset. Follow the marked path farther into the valley before the final steep ascent to the summit.
Just below the summit is a deep ravine. Be aware of it. It can be crossed without difficulty farther up toward the summit.
The summit cairn offers beautiful 360-degree views. You can see Måløy, Bremangerlandet and wind turbines. There is also a stone shelter, Olavsbu, where you can seek refuge. For dramatic views down into the fjord, continue toward the edge. There are several thrilling viewpoints for those who are not afraid of heights.
Return the same way. Enjoy your hike!
