Ruten is a prominent summit between Hemne and Rindal. The marked route from the Søvassli side climbs through forest, bog and open mountain ground to a broad summit with views toward Trollheimen, the coast and the Trøndelag mountains. The published route is 11.4 km return, with 840 m of ascent; allow 5 hr. It is graded demanding and the recommended season is all year. A large parking area is available beside the E39 at Søylifossen/Borstadsetra.
