Hike to Skålatårnet (1,843 m) from Loen
A long and demanding hike up "Norway's longest uphill climb" to Skålatårnet (1,843 m above sea level).
Cross the road and follow the gravel road to the gate. Here you can choose between the trail and the forest road. We chose the forest road, which was slightly longer. The trail and forest road meet farther up, continuing as a trail. It is well signposted and easy to follow. The climb is steep all the way to the waterfall. Cross the bridge and continue along the well-maintained trail, which zigzags up the mountainside. When you reach the first cairn at around 1,000 m above sea level, you enter a shaded valley where there may be snow. Follow the left side of Skålavatnet and continue onto the Sherpa steps.
The trail now turns steeply northwards and reaches a section with few steps, so some scrambling is required. It then levels out, and the final section follows a well-maintained stone trail.
At the summit, there are beautiful views in every direction. The old Skålatårnet and the new DNT lodge are impressive.
Stryneskåla itself (1,848 m above sea level) lies to the north-east. You can see the cairn from Skålatårnet. It is not far to walk, but I think most people are content with reaching Skålatårnet.
This is a challenging hike, so I recommend having mountain hiking experience, wearing hiking boots that cover the ankles, and bringing warm clothing and provisions.
Enjoy your hike!
