Hiking from Mjølfjell to Ulvik, part 1 – BT-hytten

This is a lovely hike that can be completed in one day or split up with an overnight stay at BT-hytten.

Hardanger Voss

Part 1 of the hike runs from Mjølfjell station to BT-hytten. This section is about 5 km long, with an elevation gain of around 300 metres.

The easiest way to get to Mjølfjell is by train. You can also drive, but retrieving your car afterwards can be challenging, as the hike ends in Ulvik.

From Mjølfjell station, the route first descends the long hill along the gravel road Allmenningsvegen. Then turn left between two houses onto a farm track leading down to the main road, Raundalsvegen. After about 50 metres, you will see a green DNT sign on the left marked “Ulvik / BT-hytten”. Follow the road towards the river and cross the suspension bridge. Just after the bridge, the trail turns right and continues along the river.

The hike then continues along a good, red T-marked trail. The trail gradually climbs to the left, and this is where most of the ascent takes place. It follows the river southwards, keeping it on the left throughout. As you gain elevation, the forest begins to thin out. The trail follows the river as it alternates between lakes and river channels. BT-hytten is located at the far end of the valley, on the left. Simply follow the trail all the way there.

BT-hytten enjoys a beautiful location by Vestevatnet. It has a kitchen with a gas stove, and water can be collected from the lake below. The cabin sleeps six, so overnight stays should be booked in advance. Remember to bring food, as there are no provisions available. A rowing boat by the lake is also available for guests to use free of charge.

After an overnight stay in the cabin, you can continue to Ulvik the following day.
