Hiking in the World Heritage Area, Part 1: Upsete to Grindaflethytta
Start your two-day hike in the heart of Western Norway's World Heritage area by the Nærøyfjord.
The hike starts at Upsete station, easily accessible by local train or the Bergen Railway. Follow Breidalen valley, climbing gradually along a well-maintained trail and passing Eilifsnuten before reaching Ljosandbotn. Here, the landscape opens up with beautiful colours and gentle formations leading you onwards to Heggjanuten and across a summer bridge over the Rjoåni river. The route then continues through Stordalen and Jøtebotnen before Grindafletvatni comes into view and you catch sight of Grindaflethytta. Walk along the lake and then cross the river.
The cabin is a traditional self-service DNT cabin with a wood-burning stove and food supplies. After a night here, your body and knees will be ready for day 2 and the next stage down to Flåm.
