About Hjørundfjord
Hjørundfjord extends south from the coastal waters near Ålesund between the steep Sunnmøre Alps. Peaks rise sharply from the fjord, leaving small deltas and shoreline shelves for communities such as Sæbø, Trandal, Standal and Øye. Side fjords and valleys, including Norangsfjord and Norangsdalen, reach deep into the mountain landscape.
The area has fewer continuous shoreline roads than many fjord regions, so ferries and boats remain important links between communities. Historic hotels, farms and seasonal mountain routes reflect a long history of travel beneath avalanche-prone slopes. From the water, visitors see the full height of the peaks; from villages and trailheads, the fjord becomes the foreground to hiking and ski terrain. Each access point has separate transport and seasonal conditions, and the central map location is not an entrance.
Visiting Hjørundfjord
Choose a specific village, ferry crossing, boat trip or marked hike and plan around its timetable. Check ferry departures, local road status and mountain weather before travelling; some services are infrequent and hikes require conditions appropriate to alpine terrain.
