Hydalshjallen Viewpoint Hike, Hemsedal

Hydalshjallen is a short mountain hike in Hemsedal with a dramatic viewpoint over Hydalen, reached by an unmarked trail near Lake Vavatn.

Hallingdal Hemsedal

Hydalshjallen is a scenic mountain viewpoint above Hydalen in Hemsedal, often compared with a miniature version of Trolltunga because of its striking photo opportunities. Unlike a long summit expedition, the route is relatively short, but it still requires attention to terrain and navigation.

From Vavatn to the viewpoint

Drive towards Hydalen via Tuv and continue past Harahorn and Lake Vavatn. The route begins near the road by the Vabuleino junction. Follow the visible but unmarked path eastwards over mountain vegetation and along the ridge to the viewpoint above the valley.

Distance and difficulty

The official Hemsedal route page lists 3.4 km as an out-and-back hike, taking approximately two hours, with around 180 metres of ascent. The route is classified as medium difficulty. Wet ground, exposed stone and lingering snow can affect conditions, even in early summer.
