Kannesteinen – Iconic Coastal Rock on Vågsøy
Discover Kannesteinen, a striking mushroom-shaped rock formation on the coast of Vågsøy, sculpted by the sea over thousands of years and located just a short drive from Måløy.
Kannesteinen is one of the most distinctive natural attractions on the island of Vågsøy. Located by the sea near the small village of Oppedal, around 10 km from Måløy, the unusual rock formation has been shaped by waves, ice and stones over thousands of years.
Standing around 3 metres high, Kannesteinen is famous for its narrow base and wide top, giving it the appearance of a mushroom or a large stone goblet. Its dramatic location right on the shoreline makes it one of the most photographed natural landmarks on the coast of Western Norway.
Visiting Kannesteinen
Kannesteinen is an easy attraction to include on a road trip around Vågsøy. There are good parking facilities at the site, and the attraction is accessible all year round.
The surrounding coastline is also worth exploring, and the drive from Måløy passes attractions such as the historic Vågsberget trading post.
Please avoid climbing on Kannesteinen. The rock is around three metres high, and the official visitor information advises against climbing due to the risk of falling and damaging the protected natural formation.
Kannesteinen is a great short stop for photography, coastal scenery and one of Vågsøy’s most unusual natural sights.
