About Likholefossen
Likholefossen is a powerful section of the Gaula watercourse on Norwegian Scenic Route Gaularfjellet. A metal footbridge crosses the river immediately above the falls, giving a close view of water accelerating through the rocky channel. Short paths on both sides connect the bridge with the surrounding forest and river landscape.
The site also links with Fossestien, a longer walking route that follows waterfalls, rapids and lakes along the protected Gaula river system. The name is associated with an old travel custom in which people carrying the dead across the mountains could shelter near the river on the way to burial. Today the stop is compact and accessible from the road, but the current below remains dangerous. Flow, spray and winter ice change conditions on the bridge and path.
Visiting Likholefossen
Use the signed parking and follow the path to the bridge, keeping within railings and away from the river edge. For any longer section of Fossestien, check route length and conditions separately; wet and icy surfaces can make even the short visit slippery.
