About Lovatnet
Lovatnet is a long, green glacial lake in Lodalen near Loen, enclosed by steep mountains and valleys leading toward Jostedalsbreen. Fine mineral particles carried by meltwater give the lake its distinctive colour, which shifts with light, weather and sediment. Roads and farms occupy narrow strips of land between the shore and the mountain walls.
The beauty of the valley is inseparable from its history. Rockfalls from Ramnefjellet generated destructive waves in 1905 and 1936, killing 61 and 74 people and devastating the communities of Nesdal and Bødal. Memorials in Lodalen record the disasters and the families affected. Today, visitors use the local road for lake views, walks and access toward Kjenndalen, but the setting remains a living rockfall and avalanche landscape rather than a managed park with one entrance.
Visiting Lovatnet
Drive carefully on the narrow local road and use only signed pull-offs, parking and public shoreline access. Allow time for the memorial sites and check conditions before continuing toward Kjenndalen; weather, rockfall work and seasonal services can affect the route.
