About Lyngen Alps
The Lyngen Alps form a roughly 90-kilometre mountain chain on the Lyngen peninsula, rising directly between fjords in northern Troms. Sharp peaks, glaciers and deep valleys create an alpine landscape whose highest summit, Jiehkkevárri, reaches 1,833 metres. Much of the range lies within the Lyngsalpan protected landscape area.
The mountains are internationally known for ski touring, climbing and hiking, but the range is not one attraction or route. Trailheads are spread among several municipalities and often involve ferries or narrow local roads. Snow remains high into summer, while winter and spring bring serious avalanche exposure. Glaciers, cornices and rapidly changing coastal weather require route-specific planning. Visitors seeking a scenic overview can use public fjord roads and villages without entering alpine terrain.
