About Mardalsfossen
Mardalsfossen drops from the high plateau above Eikesdalen in a long series of falls. Its total descent is about 705 metres, including a major free-falling section, but the watercourse is regulated for hydropower. The waterfall’s public appearance is therefore closely linked to the scheduled summer water release as well as rainfall and snowmelt.
The marked approach begins near Mardalen and leads through forest toward the lower viewpoint. As the path climbs, the upper falls become more visible and spray increases near the base. The regulation of the waterfall was the focus of major environmental protests in 1970, an important episode in modern Norwegian conservation history. Outside the release period, the cliff remains impressive but the volume of water may be much lower than photographs suggest.
Visiting Mardalsfossen
Confirm the official water-release dates and trail conditions before travelling, then use the designated parking and marked approach. The path can be wet and spray-soaked near the lower falls; do not cross barriers or enter the river channel.
