About Mjelle Beach
Mjelle is a coastal beach north of Bodø reached by a walking path from the local road. It is known for bands of red and pale sand; the red colour comes from garnet-rich mineral grains concentrated by waves. Because currents sort the sediments differently after storms, the intensity and extent of the red areas change over time.
The route to the beach passes through a coastal landscape of rock, low vegetation and views toward Landegode. Mjelle also has a place in northern Norwegian popular culture through Terje Nilsen’s song of the same name. The beach is not visible directly from a large visitor car park and requires a short walk. Tide, swell and wind determine how much shore is accessible, while the cold water and exposed rocks demand caution.
Visiting Mjelle Beach
Use the signed trailhead parking and keep the local road and private access clear, then follow the established path on foot. Check tide and wind, wear suitable shoes, and do not remove coloured sand or stones from the beach.
