About Mølen
Mølen is a protected coastal geosite at the outer end of the Brunlanes peninsula. Its extensive ridges of rounded stones are part of the Ra moraine, deposited as the last ice sheet paused and retreated. Waves continue to sort and move the material, exposing a remarkable variety of rock types transported by ice from different parts of southern Norway.
The landscape also contains large stone mounds and burial monuments associated with Iron Age activity, showing that Mølen is both geological and archaeological heritage. The headland is an important migration point for birds, particularly during spring and autumn. Visitors must not rearrange cairns or remove stones, because both scientific evidence and protected cultural features depend on the material remaining in place. Wind, waves and wet cobbles make the shore demanding to walk.
Visiting Mølen
Park in the designated area and continue on foot along established routes. Leave every stone in place, keep dogs under required control during bird seasons and stay back from waves in strong onshore wind.
