Mountain Hike to Kleivafjellet (1,057 m) in Jølster

Sunnfjord & Fjord Coast

Kleivafjellet offers impressive views. In one direction, you can see Jølstervatnet, while in the other, you can look along Kjøsnesfjorden. Kleivafjellet forms part of the subject in Nikolai Astrup's painting entitled "Kollen", albeit with some modifications.

From the car park, follow the signs marked "Vikastøylen" and "Kleivafjellet". Walk a short distance along the road, then take the marked trail on the left. Follow the trail through the forest, cross the road again, and continue along the trail. The route is marked with red stakes in the ground.

Follow the trail as it winds up the mountainside. The route is well maintained, with stone steps. First, you will reach a sign and a viewpoint with a lean-to shelter, perfect for a break if it is raining. From here, it is 100 metres to Vikastøylen, which consists of three old but well-maintained mountain farm huts standing side by side.

From here, the trail continues towards Kleivafjellet, first through the forest and then across a stream. You will then climb above the tree line and enjoy lovely views down towards Skei. Follow the trail as it winds upwards between Litlefjellet and Kleivafjellet. Just before the summit of Kleivafjellet, you will reach a large rock. From here, we recommend heading right for a short loop around the summit, offering some extra scenery and views. As you circle the summit, you will see a small cabin, with Kjøsnesfjorden just beyond it. From the cabin, head north again and loop back up to the summit. At the top, there is an impressive cairn.
