Panoramic Hike Along Veafjorden in Vaksdal

The hike begins with a steep and demanding climb up Kalddalen to around 500 metres above sea level. The trail is good and runs through the forest. It then continues on an unmarked path along Hestafjellet, through beautiful scenery with occasional views of Veafjorden.

Bergen

Higher up, the route crosses rocky terrain and passes many beautiful mountain lakes. There is a steady ascent all the way as the route turns southwest towards Fylenipa. From the summit and down towards Bergsnipa, the views become spectacular, and you can see Storafjellet from behind.

The real panoramic views are down at Bergsnipa (marked by a small cairn). From here, there is a 600-metre drop to the fjord. From Bergsnipa, follow the fjord north towards Oksla, where there is a cabin. This section of the hike is unmarked, but the route along the fjord is easy to follow. There are a few exposed sections.

From Oksla, follow the marked trail beneath Borgafjellet and down Vardadalen, passing Ulevikhytta (a red cabin painted in DNT colours). At the end, a steep trail descends through Kyradalen to the car park at Hetlevikjæ. The final section of the hike is also marked.

NB: This hike was organised by Vaksdal Turlag. They have organised it two years in a row, so there is a good chance it will be held again. If you hike independently, I recommend studying the map carefully and bringing a map, compass and GPS, as parts of the route are unmarked and off-trail.

Enjoy your hike!
