Runde – Puffin Watching on Norway’s Bird Island
Hike from Goksøyra to Lundeura on Runde and experience thousands of puffins returning to the cliffs during the breeding season. Best season: April to July, especially in the evening when the birds return from the sea.
Runde is one of Norway’s most famous bird islands and home to around 32,500 breeding pairs of puffins. During the breeding season, thousands of birds return to the dramatic cliffs of Runde, creating one of the most memorable wildlife experiences on the Norwegian coast.
Hike to the Puffins
The usual starting point is the parking area at Goksøyra. From here, follow the marked trail towards the bird cliffs and Lundeura, where the puffins gather during the breeding season.
The hike up to the bird cliffs takes approximately 45 minutes at an easy pace. The trail crosses mountain terrain with sections of stone paths and wooden boardwalks, and there are several possible walking routes across Rundefjellet.
Best Time to See Puffins
Puffins can normally be seen on Runde from April until early August, but the best period for visitors is generally April to July.
Evening is the best time to visit. Around 19:00, many puffins return from feeding at sea and become much more active around Lundeura. During the daytime, they can be harder to spot on the mountain.
Protect the Birdlife
Runde contains several protected bird areas and nature reserves. Stay on the designated trails and never cross fences or signs marking protected areas. Dogs must be kept on a leash, and visitors should take extra care not to disturb nesting birds.
If you want to experience Runde from another perspective, seasonal boat trips also operate around the island when weather conditions allow, offering the chance to see seabirds and the dramatic bird cliffs from the sea.
