Saltstraumen - Verdens sterkeste malstrøm
Saltstraumen is a natural phenomenon in Bodø, Norway. The tidal current is strongest around changing tides, so timing is central to the visit.

About Saltstraumen
Saltstraumen is a powerful tidal current in the narrow strait between Saltfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden, about 33 kilometres from Bodø. Large volumes of seawater are forced through the constriction as the tide rises and falls, creating fast currents, eddies and whirlpools. The display changes continuously and is most dramatic around the predicted peak flow rather than at ordinary high or low tide.
The current also creates a nutrient-rich marine environment known for strong fishing and specialised diving. Bridges and marked shore areas provide elevated and water-level views, but the force of the water is not safely judged by appearance alone. At slack water the surface may seem relatively calm; a short time later the same channel can be moving rapidly. Local tide tables are therefore more useful than simply arriving at a convenient hour.
Visiting Saltstraumen
Plan the stop around an official Saltstraumen current table and arrive early enough to park and walk to a safe viewpoint before peak flow. Remain behind barriers and keep well back from slippery rocks; boating, diving and close-water activities require experienced local operators who understand the current.
