Sea Serpent Tower in Seljord

The 17-metre Sea Serpent Tower at Bjørgeøyane in Seljord offers three viewing platforms over Lake Seljordsvatnet and a boardwalk through wetlands.

Telemark

The Sea Serpent Tower, known locally as Sjøormtårnet, is a 17-metre wooden observation tower beside Lake Seljordsvatnet in Telemark. Built to connect visitors with the region's famous lake-serpent legend, it offers an unusual blend of architecture, folklore and scenery.

Three levels of lake views

The tower opened on 18 October 2011 and contains three lookout platforms. From these elevated viewpoints you can look across the lake and the surrounding landscape, imagining the mysterious creature that has featured in local stories for centuries. The tower is designed so that light passes through it after dark.

Architecture in the wetlands

The approach is a path across the wetland at Bjørgeøyane, with timber sections on supports and benches along the way. Seljord municipality identifies the tower as part of the Into the Landscape project and credits its design to Rintala Eggertsson Architects.

Planning your stop

The tower is near Bjørgesanden and Seljord Camping. Follow the established path to protect the wetland, and note that an accessible route to the tower does not necessarily mean every viewing platform is step-free.
