About Slettnes Nature Reserve
Slettnes Nature Reserve protects an open Arctic coastal landscape near Gamvik on the Nordkyn Peninsula. Tundra, wetlands, ponds and rocky shore make the area important for breeding and migrating birds. The lack of trees and the broad horizon create long views but provide little shelter from wind and sudden weather.
Slettnes Lighthouse stands within this landscape and is recognised as the northernmost mainland lighthouse in Europe. Roads and marked paths provide access to selected areas, while reserve rules protect birds and vegetation from vehicles and disturbance. Species and numbers change through the season, so the site is not guaranteed to look the same from one visit to the next. Binoculars and patient observation are more useful than approaching wildlife.
Visiting Slettnes Nature Reserve
Use designated parking and established paths, keep dogs under the required control and remain outside closed nesting areas. Check lighthouse opening separately and review weather and reserve rules before travelling; fog can reduce visibility quickly.
