About Sohlbergplassen
Sohlbergplassen is a viewpoint above Atnsjøen on Norwegian Scenic Route Rondane. Its position was chosen to recall the mountain composition in Harald Sohlberg’s painting Winter Night in the Mountains, completed in 1914 after years of work. The Rondane peaks appear across the lake and forest in a sequence similar to the painter’s carefully constructed view.
Architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk designed the concrete platform to curve between existing pine trees. Openings in the deck allow trunks to pass through, so the structure frames the forest as well as the distant mountains. Visitors follow a gently descending route from the parking area to several viewing positions. The experience depends strongly on light: autumn colour, winter snow, low cloud and evening shadow each change the relationship between the dark foreground trees and the pale peaks.
Visiting Sohlbergplassen
Use the small marked parking area and follow the curved platform through the trees. Snow and ice can make the deck slippery, and there is no safe roadside overflow; if the parking area is full, continue to another legal stop.
