About Sommarøy Beaches
Sommarøy is a road-connected island community west of Tromsø, surrounded by small islands, skerries and pale beaches. Bridges link the low coastal terrain to Kvaløya, while open views extend toward the Norwegian Sea and the mountains of outer Troms. The beaches vary from small sandy coves to rocky shoreline rather than forming one continuous attraction.
Fishing remains central to the community, and houses, harbour facilities and working areas sit close to the places visitors photograph. In summer the midnight sun keeps the coast light through the night; in winter the same beaches may be covered by snow and ice. Water remains cold year-round, and wind can create difficult conditions despite the tropical colour of the shallows. Access is distributed among public paths and local businesses, with no single beach entrance.
Visiting Sommarøy Beaches
Choose a confirmed public beach or viewpoint and park only where signs permit. Respect working harbours and private property, check wind and tide before swimming or paddling, and follow local restrictions on camping and fires.
