About Stegastein Viewpoint in Aurland
Stegastein is a viewing platform on Aurlandsfjellet about 650 metres above Aurlandsfjord. The structure extends 30 metres from the mountainside and ends at a glass barrier, creating an uninterrupted view toward Aurlandsvangen, the fjord and the mountains in the direction of Flåm. Its height makes the scale of the glacial landscape legible in a way that is impossible from the shoreline.
Architects Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen designed the pine-clad steel platform, which opened in 2006 as part of the Norwegian Scenic Routes programme. The curve at the outer end gives the illusion that the deck drops away into the landscape, while the service building is placed partly over the slope to preserve the view. Stegastein is reached by a narrow, winding road from Aurland. The viewpoint remains accessible in winter even though the through-road across Aurlandsfjellet closes beyond it.
