About Steinsdalsfossen
Steinsdalsfossen is a waterfall near Norheimsund where a maintained path passes behind the falling water. The main drop is about 50 metres, and the overhang allows visitors to stand between the cliff and the cascade without crossing the river. From behind the falls, the view looks outward through a moving curtain of water toward the valley.
The waterfall’s present course dates from a change in the river in the late seventeenth century. It became a popular Hardanger travel stop during the nineteenth century and was repeatedly visited by Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm II. Today, stone paths, steps and railings provide a defined route from the visitor area to the rear of the waterfall. Flow is usually strongest during spring snowmelt and after rain, while spray can make the path wet even in otherwise dry weather.
Visiting Steinsdalsfossen
Follow the signed path from the visitor area and wear shoes suitable for wet stone. The route behind the waterfall is normally straightforward, but ice, high flow or maintenance can affect access; use designated parking and observe any temporary barriers.
