Svandalsfossen is one of the signature waterfall stops along Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke, in the landscape between Sauda and Ropeid. When water levels are high, spray and rushing water make this a particularly powerful roadside nature experience.
540 steps beside the falls
A specially developed walkway and stairway lead upwards alongside the waterfall. According to the Norwegian Scenic Routes authority, there are 540 steps, offering changing views of the cascade, surrounding rock faces and green vegetation. The setting is particularly dramatic in periods of heavy flow.
A scenic-route stop
Svandalsfossen forms part of the collection of rest areas and viewpoints along the Ryfylke scenic route. Visitors can enjoy a brief stop at the lower viewing area or spend longer climbing the stairs. Expect wet steps and slippery surfaces close to the water.
Planning your visit
The waterfall lies beside the road on the scenic route towards Sauda. Weather and river flow affect how close and comfortable the experience feels. Stay within designated viewing areas and keep children close on steps and near the water.
