About Trollfjord
Trollfjord is a short, narrow side fjord between the Lofoten and Vesterålen island groups. Its entrance is only about 100 metres wide in places, while steep mountains rise directly from the water and make the inner basin feel enclosed. There is no public road to the fjord, so the changing perspective from a boat is an essential part of the visit.
The fjord is also linked to the Battle of Trollfjord in 1890, when local open-boat fishermen confronted steam-powered fishing vessels over access to the cod fishery. The event became a symbol of tensions between traditional coastal communities and industrial fishing. Today, sightseeing boats, RIB excursions and coastal cruises enter when weather and sea conditions allow. Sea eagles are often part of the wider experience, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and responsible operators avoid disturbing birds.
Visiting Trollfjord
Book a boat trip from Svolvær, Stokmarknes or another established harbour and check the exact route, vessel type and weather policy. Conditions at the narrow entrance can change quickly, and there is no independent road access or public parking at Trollfjord itself.
