About Trollholmsund Dolomite Formations

Trollholmsund is a group of pale dolomite pillars beside Porsangerfjord. Wind, frost and water have eroded the layered rock into isolated towers and rounded forms that stand out against the low coastal terrain. The dolomite originated in an ancient marine environment, giving the site geological interest beyond its unusual silhouettes.

A Sámi legend describes the pillars as trolls turned to stone after being caught by the sun, a story that explains the name and remains part of the place’s cultural interpretation. The formations are reached on foot from the local access area, and the route crosses open ground that may include private or grazing land. The rock is fragile on a human timescale, so climbing and removing pieces would damage the geosite.

Visiting Trollholmsund Dolomite Formations

Use the established parking and walking route, close any gates and keep dogs under control around livestock. Stay on durable ground, do not climb the pillars or remove rock, and check local access guidance before travelling.
