About Unstad Beach
Unstad Beach lies at the end of a steep-sided valley on the outer coast of Vestvågøy. The horseshoe-shaped bay faces the Norwegian Sea and is internationally known for Arctic surfing. Norwegian surfers began exploring the waves here in the 1960s, and the settlement now supports surf schools, accommodation and equipment services.
The beach remains part of a small farming community rather than a purpose-built resort. Old and new road tunnels connect the valley to the rest of Lofoten, while mountains contain the settlement on three sides. Wave quality varies with swell direction, wind and tide, and cold-water equipment is required throughout the year. Non-surfers can experience the beach from shore, but should give working farms, residents and surf operations space.
Visiting Unstad Beach
Park only in signed public or business areas and follow current local fees and camping rules. Book instruction with an established operator if surfing, and check swell, wind and avalanche or winter-road conditions before entering the valley.
