About Ureddplassen

Ureddplassen is a rest area and memorial on Norwegian Scenic Route Helgelandskysten in Gildeskål. The site faces the open sea toward islands and distant mountains, with an amphitheatre-like concrete terrace that follows the curved shoreline. A wave-shaped service building and carefully placed seating turn a necessary road stop into a framed coastal viewpoint.

The memorial commemorates the Norwegian submarine HNoMS Uredd, which was lost on a minefield in Fugløyfjorden in February 1943 with its entire crew and accompanying personnel. Its presence gives the site a reflective purpose beyond the scenery. The modern rest area was redesigned to improve accessibility and safety while retaining the existing memorial. In clear weather the horizon can extend toward the Lofoten wall; in wind and winter weather the same exposed position feels much more severe.

Visiting Ureddplassen

Use the integrated parking and follow the paved route to the memorial and terrace. The stop is exposed to wind, spray and winter ice, and parking is limited; keep the turning area clear and check road conditions along the Helgeland coast.
