About Uttakleiv Beach
Uttakleiv Beach faces the open Norwegian Sea on the outer side of Vestvågøy. Rounded boulders, tidal pools and a smaller arc of pale sand sit below steep mountain slopes, creating a different character from nearby Haukland’s broader sandy bay. The west- and north-facing horizon makes Uttakleiv a well-known place for midnight sun in summer and aurora viewing in the darker months.
One frequently photographed feature is a naturally eroded boulder with a circular pool known as the Eye of Uttakleiv, but it lies among wet intertidal rocks and should be approached cautiously. The old road around the headland provides a walking connection to Haukland, while the modern tunnel carries vehicles. Local landowners manage parking, camping and sanitation to protect a heavily visited agricultural and coastal area.
Visiting Uttakleiv Beach
Use the managed parking area and follow the posted payment, camping and overnight-stay rules. Check tide, swell and wind before going onto the boulders, and keep away from livestock areas and private access roads.
