Hike to Tvergastein (1,505 m above sea level) – Arne Næss’ hut at the foot of Hallingskarvet

Historic mountain hike to Arne Næss’ Tvergastein.

Geilo

Start at Prestholtseter (toll road accessible during the snow-free season). Follow the T-marked trail west along Hallingskarvet for approximately 3.7 km to a trail junction. From here, there is no official T-marked trail to the hut (at Næss’ request), but the route is marked with small cairns: Cross the river and follow the faint path northwest towards Hallingskarvet. In some places, the trail and markers are unclear; continue steadily uphill towards the mountain. As you round the ridge, Tvergastein comes into view. The final section is easy to follow, and the hut can be seen from afar.

The hut offers magnificent views of Ustaoset and much of Hardangervidda, and on exceptionally clear days, Gaustatoppen can be glimpsed in the distance. The hut is managed by a private foundation and is not open to visitors. Looking up towards Hallingskarvet from the hut, you will see Skarvereiret (1,740 m above sea level), the small climbing hut built by Næss.

Return: Follow the same route back.
