The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is one of Norway’s most spectacular train journeys, running between the fjord village of Flåm and Myrdal station high in the mountains.
The journey takes around 55 minutes each way, climbing from Flåm by the Aurlandsfjord through the dramatic Flåm Valley to Myrdal. Along the way, the train passes steep mountainsides, traditional farms, rushing rivers, waterfalls and a series of tunnels built into the mountains.
The railway is also one of Northern Europe’s steepest standard-gauge railway lines, with much of the route climbing at a gradient of 1:18.
Stop at Kjosfossen
One of the highlights is Kjosfossen, where the train makes a stop of around five minutes. Passengers can step outside and experience the powerful waterfall up close before continuing towards Vatnahalsen and Myrdal.
At Vatnahalsen, you will also find Vatnahalsen Mountain Hotel and the starting point of Flåm Zipline.
Myrdal & the Bergen Railway
Myrdal is the final station on the Flåm Railway and sits high above the valley. From here, you can connect directly with the Bergen Railway towards Bergen, Voss, Geilo or Oslo.
Many visitors simply take the Flåm Railway from Flåm to Myrdal and return on the next train, making it an easy half-day experience.
You can also combine the train journey with hiking or cycling. Bikes are allowed on board with a bicycle ticket, and the route from Myrdal or Vatnahalsen down through Flåmsdalen to Flåm is a popular outdoor adventure.
